Meet Managing Partner, John Daniel Rivers, CLU, ChFC, CFP®, RHU, REBC
Servant leader. That's how Dan Rivers, managing partner for the Northwestern
Mutual Financial Network Office in Louisville, Ky., describes his leadership style.
Dan Rivers was named managing partner on Sept. 1, 2005 after 12 years as a managing director for Jim Worrell in Columbia, S.C.
Strong leader from the start
Worrell credits Rivers' natural ability with helping him achieve success – and is confident that his talent will pave the way for a thriving transition for him and the network office.
“Dan is adept at turning concepts into concrete action,” Worrell said. “He listens to other people, and considers all viewpoints. His genuine interest and concern will serve his people well.” Worrell saw those traits early, when Rivers was a college representative. “From Dan's first day, to his role as managing director, he has had unyielding faith in the Northwestern Mutual system and the people who are a part of it,” Worrell said. “That belief is reflected in his actions. He has done the right things for his clients, the company, and other financial representatives, and as managing partner he will perpetuate a culture that reflects that commitment.”
Support for growth
That culture, according to Rivers, includes refining the Network's infrastructure and systems to support accelerated vertical and horizontal growth. “Long-term, my goal is to build a network office that is the envy of the industry and a dominant player in every market.”
Dan Rivers knows it's possible because his financial representatives are ready to take their practices to the next level. “I joined an organization with a strong foundation. To this well-built team, I want to help recruit people who share the values and commitment exemplified by these people. I am honored to be among those who take such great pride in the value they provide to their clients, and in the manner in which they provide that value.”
Challenges ahead
Rivers is the first to admit that he has challenges ahead. One of the biggest is leading an
organization that will ultimately include three former network offices: the Lexington, Ky., district office, which combined with Louisville several years ago; and the Evansville, Ind., network office, which became part of the Louisville network office on Jan. 1, 2006. “I am melding different cultures and styles, but the common thread is the integrity and values that are held by all of the individuals in these offices. I will honor and respect the past as we move forward together into the future.”
Dan Rivers wakes up every morning and focuses on what his organization needs. “I am responsible for making sure that financial representatives are being challenged to grow personally and professionally – and getting the support they need to make quantum leaps. I respect the difficulty inherent in this fabulous career. My job is to provide backing, encouragement, and challenge in an atmosphere of growth. I have learned and
developed that philosophy from a number of people as part of Northwestern Mutual for 20 years.”
Personal development
Dan Rivers has a strong commitment to personal development, and he hopes that his commitment to lifelong learning will inspire people around him to make a commitment to expand their thinking and education, just as others did for him.
Dan Rivers credits Jim Worrell with giving him what he needed to develop: the freedom to run his operation in the way that fit his personal style – and the chance to make mistakes. “I learned lessons in a completely supportive environment. I am thankful to Jim for the opportunity to experiment and try new things.”
In return, Dan Rivers wants to be a positive influence in the lives of his “clients” – financial representatives. “I hope that my influence will translate into helping them add more value for their clients. And I hope to teach each person to nurture his or her talent, because that's how you grow and accomplish great things.”

Daniel Mark Dixon, Financial Representative
Before becoming a Financial Representative, I spent 13 years in youth ministry. The greatest reward is helping others protect today and anticipate tomorrow through the resources of the strongest company in the industry. The greatest challenge is consistently meeting new people, and early on, recognizing the needs and matching the service to the needs. But over time, I’ve learned I can because I care.
Career Advice
Make certain that you are concerned about helping people, not just trying to make a lot of fast money. And never forget it. Early on, it was a tougher start than anticipated. The learning curve was huge and there is still much to learn. I believe the strength of my business will be the integrity I bring to the table for my clients. I must demonstrate my compassion and be trustworthy. I believe sticking it out is better than standing out.
This company is differentiated from the others because of its approach of risk-based financial management, because of the network of services we provide, and because of the specialists in our office who work hand in hand with the Financial Representatives.
Garry Steven Burry, Financial Representative
After graduating from high school, I decided to work a summer job in a warehouse, planning to go to college in the fall. I was 17. When fall came, the department store that owned the warehouse invited me to sell carpeting and Oriental rugs. I decided to not attend college and spent the next nine years at the store.
I was 26 years old and didn’t like the fact that the ‘managers’ were working nights, weekends and holidays. I thought that someday I would be married and have children and wanted to be more involved in their lives. A high school friend who was a financial representative invited me to lunch with a Northwestern Mutual Financial Network managing partner at a very exclusive club that I had never visited. I thought, sure I’ll go for a free lunch. I then interviewed with 19 other companies in the financial planning and casualty insurance areas but decided to go with the Network because of the people in the office and the stellar reputation the company had. This was in 1983. I’ve lived happily ever after ever since.
I knew this career would allow me to decide my own days off, work to the income level I wanted, leave early to see my children’s events and become involved in charitable events. Sometimes it’s hard to believe, but we actually gave away more to charity in 2004 than my last year’s income at the department store.
Over the years, I’ve learned that I’m a winner and I love the mutual respect that I have for others in my office who do what they need to do to stay in the business. This business is the ultimate equal opportunity employer.
